Another Map of the C Major Scale / C Major Scale 6SR2
C Major Scale 6SR2 starts at String 6 Fret 8. This scale is also good to demonstrate another characteristic unique to guitar and other stringed instruments(ie. violin, cello, mandolin, etc). The same scale and range of tones can be played in an entirely different position on the fretboard. This makes for some very interesting fingerings and harmonic configurations.
Below is a Fretboard Map representation of this scale starting on the 6th String 8th Fret:

Visualizing the Degrees of the Scale:

And, visualizing the Fingerings:
This fingering of the C Major Scale 6SR2, as far as the lower octave is concerned, is similar to the fingering we did for the C Major Scale at String 5 Fret 3. We just started it on a different string. If we choose a different fret and consequently a different key, on either string 5 or string 6, we can apply the same fingering to achieve a different Major Scale from that root. Also note, however, that the upper octave fingering shifts slightly due to the 2nd string tuned down a half-step and the fact that you are using 5 strings instead of 6.
Another point to keep in mind is that these are only suggested fingerings. They tend to move vertically, from string to string, up or down the fingerboard. Other fingerings exist that tend to move horizontally playing more notes on a single string before switching. These usually involve more finger stretching and finger shifting. A Jazz Guitarist who probably employed this type of movement extensively was the legendary Django Reinhardt.
What's the meaning of 5SR2 and 6SR2 in my scale maps?I'm sure you've noticed my use of 5SR2 and 6SR2 in scale identification. It is a variation of a designation I borrowed from Jimmy Bruno, a fantastic Jazz Guitar Player from the Philadelphia area. "2" refers to the starting finger for the starting note. Fingers "1" and "4" will appear on other maps. Mr. Bruno's complete system is slightly different and more involved describing horizontal and vertical movement, but well worth studying. I will try to include a link in a future update on this site.
